22-X by Roger

If you’ve been exposed to ABC Wednesday for an extended period, you know we make exceptions from the explicit, exacting requirement to have your topic start with X.

We’ll accept words starting with ex as an acceptable exhortation, or objects looking like the letter X, as well as X-ray or xylophone.

After several rounds, you may have exhausted your vocabulary. It’s no exaggeration that it has become extraordinarily difficult to find enough X words, so we’ve expanded the definition.

As long as we can extrapolate some extra meaning related to X, we won’t excommunicate you from the excitement.

Excelsior!

W is for Weddings

A I worked on an art challenge for Sunday Postcard Art last week whose theme was “June Brides”, I thought about the two women and two weddings depicted in the card.

brides 001

I used photos of my mother and myself, on the day of our weddings – 52 years apart.

My mother’s wedding gown has a glorious long train and a veil that was borrowed.

My mother was only 21, embarking on a marriage to a widower with a young son. It would be a challenge at times. There would be four other children – two boys and two girls.

At age 50, I was marrying for the second time and I so wanted to look and feel like a princess.

We were blending two families – each of us with three children. We became a real “Brady” bunch.

There will be many weddings in the months ahead. My own daughter will marry in August and she has asked me to walk her down the aisle – what an honour.

May all these brides experience the “love, laughter and happily ever after” that I have.

I was musing about VALUE. It’s a word with lots of meanings.

Noun: The regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
“your support is of great VALUE”
synonyms: worth, usefulness, advantage, benefit, gain, profit, good, help, merit, helpfulness, avail

Noun: A person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.
“they internalize their parents’ rules and VALUES”
synonyms: principles, ethics, moral code, morals, standards, code of behavior
“society’s VALUES are passed on to us as children”

Verb: Estimate the monetary worth of (something).
synonyms: evaluate, assess, estimate, appraise, price, put/set a price on
“his estate was VALUED at $345,000”

Verb: Consider (someone or something) to be important or beneficial; have a high opinion of.
“she had come to VALUE her privacy and independence”
synonyms: think highly of, have a high opinion of, hold in high regard, rate highly, esteem, set (great) store by, put stock in, appreciate, respect

It seems to me that the monetary worth definition feels less important than the notions of principles or high regard.

For instance, I VALUE the time I come to ABC Wednesday. I get to read what VALUES you have to to impart. I VALUE your collective wisdom, even though I have no idea about the VALUE of your cars, houses or the like.

ABC Wednesday is more VALUABLE when you comment on other folks’ blogs.
